Declined, or found something you do not recognise.

The scope, both halves of it

What can be disputed, and what cannot

A dispute is an argument about accuracy. If something on your file is wrong, incomplete or cannot be verified, there is a route. If it is simply true, there is not, and no amount of money changes that.

Both lists below are short on purpose. A company with a long list of what it can do is usually counting things twice.

Things with a route

  • An account that is not yours

Somebody else’s account on your file, or one opened in your name. This is the clearest kind of dispute there is, and if it is identity theft there are stronger routes than a dispute letter.

  • A balance or a limit that is wrong

The number reported does not match what you owe or what your limit is. A wrong limit can hurt you even when the balance is right.

  • A date that is wrong

Particularly the date of last activity, because it often decides when the item ages off. A date two years out can cost you two years.

  • The same debt reported twice

The original lender and a collection agency both reporting the same debt as live. One of them should not be.

  • An account that is closed but reported open

Or paid but reported outstanding. Status errors are common and they are provable.

  • A dispute that came back verified too quickly

You can ask how they checked. They have 15 days to describe the procedure and name who they contacted, and sometimes the answer is revealing.

Things with none

  • Remove accurate information

Nobody can. Accurate, complete and verifiable information stays until it ages off, which for most negative items is seven years.

  • Promise a score, or a number of points

Scores come from models nobody here controls. Promising a number is a misrepresentation under CROA 1679b(a) and it is what this industry is most often sued for.

  • Promise a date

The reinvestigation clock belongs to the agency: 30 days from receipt, extending to 45. We can start it on a provable date and hold them to it. We cannot shorten it.

  • Give you legal advice

We are not lawyers. Where your situation needs one, particularly identity theft or a bureau that has ignored two proper disputes, we will say so and stop.

  • Make a debt go away

A dispute is about what is reported, not about what you owe. If the debt is real, disputing the entry does not cancel it.

  • Stand between you and a free dispute

You can do every part of this yourself at no cost. The method is on this site in full, and we will tell you on the review when that is the better answer.

Before you ask

Six things we will say no to

No

“Can you take a deposit today and start straight away?”

CROA 1679b(b)

No credit repair organisation may charge or receive any money for a service before that service is fully performed. A deposit is money before performance.

The review is free and there is nothing to pay to begin. You are invoiced per item, after that item has an outcome in writing.

Nobody can

“Can you get the late payments off? They are mine but it was a bad year.”

FCRA 611

The dispute process addresses information that is inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable. Accurate, complete and verifiable information stays until it ages off.

Most negative information comes off after seven years on its own. We will tell you the date. If the dates or amounts are wrong, that is a different conversation and we can have it.

Nobody can

“How many points will this put on my score?”

CROA 1679b(a)(3)

Scores are calculated by models we do not control, from data we do not own, and a promise about one is a misrepresentation. It is also the single most common thing this industry is sued for.

We will tell you what we think can be disputed and on what basis. What that does to a number is not ours to promise and we will not guess at it.

No

“Somebody offered me a CPN so I can start fresh. Is that worth doing?”

CROA 1679b(a)(1) and (2)

Advising you to use a new identifying number in place of your Social Security number, or to make an untrue statement to an agency, is illegal. It is usually a stolen number, often a child’s.

Nothing. Walk away from whoever offered it. If you have already used one, speak to a lawyer today rather than to us.

We cannot

“Can you guarantee it will be done before my closing date?”

FCRA 611(a)(1)

The clock belongs to the agency: 30 days from receipt, extending to 45. We can make sure it starts on a provable date and that late is visible. We cannot make it shorter.

Tell us the date on the free review. If there is not enough runway we will say so and you can decide whether to start at all.

No

“Can I just pay you monthly so it keeps going?”

CROA 1679b(b)

A monthly fee charged before the month’s work is performed is an advance fee. It is also how people end up paying for a year of letters nobody read.

Per item, after an outcome. If there is nothing left worth disputing we will tell you and stop billing you, which is the point of charging this way.
