Why we will not quote you a score

Every company that promises points is making the same illegal promise. What we can tell you instead, and why the honest version is more useful.

It is the first question almost everybody asks, and it is completely reasonable. How many points? We will not answer it, and this is why, including the part where refusing is not us being principled but us not wanting to be sued.

It is illegal to promise, and that is not a technicality

CROA 15 U.S.C. 1679b(a)(3) makes it unlawful for anyone to make or use any untrue or misleading representation of the services of a credit repair organisation. A specific promise about a score is exactly that, because nobody offering it is in a position to know.

This is not an obscure provision. It is the single thing this industry is most often prosecuted and sued over, and companies that make the promise tend also to be the ones taking money up front, which is illegal too.

Even honestly, nobody could tell you

There is no single score. There are many models, from more than one company, in several versions, and lenders choose between them and sometimes build their own. A change that moves one model meaningfully may barely move another.

The models are also not linear. The same deletion produces a different result depending on what else is on the file, how old the file is, and how many other accounts are reporting. Anybody quoting you a number is quoting you a number they made up.

What we will tell you instead

  • Which specific items appear disputable, and on what factual basis.
  • Which are accurate, and therefore staying until they age off.
  • The date each negative item is due to drop off on its own.
  • Whether, in our view, the whole exercise is worth paying for at all.

That last one is the useful one, and it is the one a company promising points will never give you, because their answer is always yes.

The uncomfortable version

Sometimes the honest answer is that your report is accurate, your score is a fair description of a hard few years, and the thing that will change it is time plus paying what you owe on schedule from here. Nobody wants to hear that and nobody can sell it, which is precisely why so few people say it.

If that is your situation, we will tell you on the free review, you will have spent nothing, and you can go and spend the money you were about to spend on something that will actually help.
